About this course
The course aims to provide students with new expertise essential for professionals in the sphere of 3D bioengineering of tissues and organs.
The course is taught on-campus, at Sechenov University’s Design-center «Biofactory», and is certified according to GOST ISO 13485-2017 (state standard that corresponds to international standard ISO 13485:2016 - Medical devices — Quality management systems — Requirements for regulatory purposes).

- 3D bioprinting processes,
- 3D bioprinting materials,
- 3D models for 3D bioprinting
Workshop:
- Determining optimal bioink printing parameters,
- Preparing 3D models for bioprinting
Individual work: Practicing with 3D models for bioprinting
Lectures:
- Bioink and Biopaper, definition and types,
- Biomaterial and cellular component of bioink,
- Scaffolds and hydrogels,
- Cells, spheroids, organoids
- Preparing agarose plates for seeding spheroids,
- Seeding spheroids from various cell types / cell mixtures
- Individual work: critical literature review in a specific field to determine bioprinting components required for your project
Lectures:
- The concept of biomimetics,
- How to choose biomaterial and cellular components,
- Bioreactors
Workshop:
- Preparing biopaper,
- Printing on biopaper,
- Imaging of the spheroids seeded previous day
Individual work: developing the plan of your experiment
Lectures:
- Key requirements for 3D bioprinting materials,
- Adverse factors in 3D bioprinting process,
- Biodegradability of polymer biomaterials,
- Cell differentiation within tissue-engineered constructs,
- Dimensions and vascularization of tissue-engineered constructs,
- Various types of preconditioning as a way to simulate cell viability
Workshop:
- Imaging of the spheroids,
- Inkjet and FRESH bioprinting,
- Working with the software and calculating the viability of constructs,
- Calculating spheroid diameter in ImageJ – compaction assessment
Individual work: calculating real experimental data
Lectures:
- 3D bioprinting of tissues and organs,
- Existing technologies for creating tissue-engineered products using 3D bioprinting,
- 3D models for drug testing,
- Organ-on-a-chip,
- 3D bioprinting development
Workshop:
- Imaging of the spheroids,
- Preparing bioink with spheroids,
- 3D bioprinting,
- Quantitative (Alamar Blue) and qualitative (Live/Dead) survival assessment,
- Presentation of the results

- Collecting the results of the mini-experiment
